“Don’t wish me happiness. I don’t expect to be happy. Wish me courage, strength, and a sense of humor. I will need them all!”

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Privately-owned guns in NY will now dry-up.

NY’s vast army of erstwhile-unemployed bureaucrats have now decided that last year’s SAFE Act requires all “mental health professionals” to report to the State anyone among their patients who is:

“…likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others.”

They make no distinction between violent criminal acts and reasonable, legal self-defense, so I assume all police officers automatically fall into the above category.

When these ill-defined “mental health professionals,” a class that probably includes at least all doctors, maybe nurses and others too, fail to “identify” such people, they go to prison. Thus, when you fail to accurately predict any patient’s future behavior, you’re guilty!

You can see what’s coming:

Heretofore, people with serious, legitimate mental illnesses would lose gun rights only when they had been involuntarily committed, had made overt threats, or had been legally designated as “mentally ill,” or “incompetent,” a long and involved process with plenty of oversight and opportunity for appeal.

Now, that important safeguard has been conveniently removed by NY liberals!

Anyone some politician doesn’t like can now be arbitrarily disenfranchised, with no warning, no appeal, and no access to justice. How can anyone prove they’re “not crazy?”

Terrified “mental health professionals” (whomever they are) will nervously “report” virtually everyone they’ve ever seen, out of fear of imprisonment.

Politicians will predictably decide that anyone who opposes them, or even says something unkind about them, is obviously “mentally ill!”

NY has inherited a real can or worms! Before long, only politicians, along with friends and supporters, will be deemed “sane” enough for gun ownership. Imagine that!

The rest of us must be extremely suspicions of motives, and the personal character, of any politician who declares “mental illness” to be such a threat that, before being allowed to own a gun, all Americans must “prove” they are not “mentally ill!”

“The problem with people who have no vices is that you can be sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues!”

Elizabeth Taylor
