“‘This is very unusual” will continue to be a sorry epitaph etched on gravestones of the self-deceptive and blithely unprepared!
Training axiom
Yet another fatal bear attack, this one in FL on Monday evening.
The offending black bear appears to have violently entered the victim’s (age 89 w/mobility limitations) home.
Victim was found (dead and partially eaten) 100m away from the residence. Victim’s dog was also killed by the bear.
In the aftermath, we of course hear the nauseating mantra, “Black-bear attacks on humans are highly unusual.”
However, they are apparently frequent enough that FL’s Governor signed a law last June authorizing deadly force against threatening bears (as if we needed his “permission”)
A FWC official states, “We are in the process of finding out why this bear did what it did”
Very quaint, but mostly academic!
What is important?
“Why” the bear attacked, or how potential victims of bear attacks can protect themselves?
The same FWC officials offers these wonderful “tips” on what to do during a bear attack:
“Stand your ground. Make yourself ‘look large.’ ‘Talk to the bear’ in a calm manner. Don’t run. Don’t ‘play dead’ When a bear is touching you, you need to ‘fight back.’”
Of course, he provides no specifics with regard to exactly how I’m supposed to “fight back”
And, of course there is absolutely no mention of being armed and ready when in “bear country” (which includes much of FL)
With all due respect for these officials, half-truths are still lies!
Expecting frank honesty from bureaucrats (even in a red state) obviously continues to be an exercise in wishful thinking!
“Some are unwittingly blind; others willfully blind”
